HEMS Industry Risk Profile Position Statement
On Monday, April 20, 2009, the Flight Safety Foundation, an international research and advocacy organization whose mission is to pursue the continuous improvement of global aviation safety and the prevention of accidents, released an assessment of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) industry. The assessment, referred to as an Industry Risk Profile (IRP), was developed and prepared by Aerosafe Risk Management, an Australian aviation risk and safety company. As stated by the Flight Safety Foundation, the IRP “provides a roadmap outlining proactive steps that the industry and regulators can follow in order to mitigate risks.”

REACH Air Medical Services welcomes and supports the intent and efforts of the Flight Safety Foundation and Aerosafe Risk Management in bringing this matter to the forefront.

Among the many affiliations, activities and technologies used by REACH to enhance safety, REACH is a founding member of the North American Aviation Safety Network (ASN). ASN, a subsidiary of Aerosafe Risk Management, was established in March 2005 to support participants in the implementation of advisory standards for the best in practice safety and risk management programs in the air medical profession. As an active member, REACH works and collaborates with other like-minded air medical companies committed to creating and sustaining an unparalleled safety and risk management culture.

The elimination of air medical accidents is an absolute that cannot be minimized, delayed, or actuarially accepted. REACH's commitment to those we serve and those we employ is that we will take all necessary steps to ensure their safety and well being. As a leader in the air medical profession, REACH understands and acknowledges that air medical services are not without risks. However, and most importantly, we also know and understand that with proper risk management and safety planning we can address and manage our risks in order to ensure the safety of our employees and our patients.
